Drive through Senatobia on a Friday now and you will notice two different kinds of headlights pointing in two different directions. Some are turning onto West Main Street, toward axes, arcade games, and a speakeasy that does not open until eight. Others are following Highway 55 out to Norfleet Drive, toward a dining room that used to be an Applebee's and now serves something else entirely. Both crowds think they know where the good dinner in town is. They are both right, and they are talking about two different buildings.
That split did not happen by accident, and it did not happen all at once. It took about two and a half years to build, and it only became complete this year. Understanding how it came together tells you more about where Senatobia's evening life is actually headed than any single restaurant opening could.
Main Street Turned One Address Into Three Restaurants
Woodchucks opened at 304 West Main Street with a ribbon-cutting hosted by Senatobia Main Street, and it arrived as the city's newest dining and entertainment spot. Owners Brandon and Destin Westmoreland ran it in partnership with Tandem Restaurant Partners, the group behind Zinnie's, Uncle Red's, and Front Street Deli elsewhere in the area. The concept at the time was straightforward: a full food menu built around burgers, sandwiches, and fried appetizers, six lanes for axe throwing, a pool table, and a boxing arcade machine bolted to one wall.
That was the whole operation for about a year. Then the Westmorelands announced they were not just adding a pizza oven. They were building two more restaurants inside the same expanded footprint. As WhatNow Memphis reported, the Westmorelands wrote in a Facebook update, "This will essentially be three concepts in one location." Woodchucks kept its axe lanes and its revamped bar menu. Retro Dough Pizzeria & Arcade moved in next to it with New York style pizza, pasta, and hot sub sandwiches served alongside a wall of 1980s arcade cabinets. The Hideout Speakeasy took the back of the building for itself, a 21-and-up room that charges a cover, opens at eight in the evening, and runs a small-plates and craft cocktail menu separate from anything else in the building.
By the time a food writer for The Delta Review stopped in on a Fourth of July visit, all three menus were running at once, and the writer's actual problem was deciding which of them to order from. That is worth sitting with for a second. Senatobia's most talked-about new restaurant is not one restaurant. It is three, stacked inside a single Main Street address, each one built for a different kind of evening: family dinner with axe lanes for the kids' table, retro pizza night with the arcade running in the background, or a reservation-only cocktail room for the night you actually got a sitter.
Norfleet Drive Filled the Building Applebee's Left Behind
While Main Street was busy tripling itself, the Applebee's out on Norfleet Drive quietly closed and sat empty. That storefront, at 181 Norfleet Drive just off Highway 55, is not a downtown address. It is a highway-facing building with easy parking and visibility from Highway 55.
The Memphis-based Tekila Restaurant Group, which also operates Tekila Mexican Steakhouse and had just opened its East Memphis concept Fuego Vivo, opened its newest restaurant, Zona 55 Urban Kitchen, in the Norfleet Drive building on May 25 of this year. The name is a small piece of local logic: "zona" means zone, and 55 refers to the highway running past the front door. It is not a Senatobia-specific idea repackaged from somewhere else. It is a restaurant named for exactly where it sits.
The staff's prior work at Tekila locations in Southaven is another point of connection between Zona 55 and the group's area operations.
Two Buildings, Two Different Nights Out
Put the two projects side by side and the difference in what they are built for becomes obvious.
| Woodchucks / Retro Dough / The Hideout | Zona 55 Urban Kitchen | |
|---|---|---|
| Address | 304 W Main St | 181 Norfleet Dr |
| What it replaced | New build within an existing entertainment space | The former Applebee's |
| What's inside | Axe throwing, arcade games, three separate menus | Sit-down Mexican-inspired dining room and bar |
| Built for | Family night, retro pizza night, or a 21+ cocktail evening | A planned dinner out |
| When it reached its current form | Three concepts complete by mid-2025 | Opened May 25, 2026 |
Neither one is trying to be the other. Woodchucks and its two roommates are built around activity and flexibility, a place where a group can split up between axe lanes, an arcade cabinet, and a booth without anyone leaving the building. Zona 55 is built around a single dining room and a menu meant to be ordered course by course. One is a destination for an evening that might change plans halfway through. The other is a destination you book because you already know what you want.
Why the Timing Is the Actual Story
Here is the part that a quick restaurant roundup would miss: the dates show how the two sides of town came into focus at different times. Downtown finished its transformation less than a year before Norfleet Drive got its answer. Woodchucks had already absorbed Retro Dough and The Hideout before Zona 55 opened, giving Main Street a three-in-one entertainment complex while the highway corridor still had an empty dining room sitting behind a for-lease sign. For that stretch, if you wanted a proper sit-down dinner in Senatobia rather than a bar-and-arcade night, your options ran thin.
Zona 55's opening this past May is what closed that gap. It gave the highway side of town its own reason to stop rather than pass through, and it did it in the exact building that had symbolized the gap in the first place. The town did not get one more restaurant. It got the second half of a dining identity that had been half-finished for a year.
For anyone who has lived here through both openings, the practical effect is that a night out no longer means driving toward Southaven or Hernando to find something beyond fast food and a diner counter. It means picking a corridor. Main Street if the plan is loose and the group is mixed ages. Norfleet Drive if the plan is set and the table is booked. That is a genuinely different town to come home to at six in the evening than the one that existed three years ago, and it happened through two unrelated business decisions that landed less than a year apart.
What This Says About Where Senatobia Is Headed
Woodchucks combines axe throwing, arcade games, and three menus. Zona 55 is a restaurant from a hospitality group with concepts in Southaven and East Memphis. The two offer distinct options in Senatobia.
The two projects took shape in the same eighteen-month window, bringing distinct dining options to different parts of town. Whichever side of town you end up on this Friday, that is worth knowing before you pick.
If you are watching Senatobia from a distance and wondering what a town with this kind of local investment looks like up close, or if you already live here and want to talk about what any of it means for your street, Move With Wow is easy to reach. Chad and Deanna answer their own phone, and a conversation about the neighborhood never has to start with a listing.
